It’s the dawning of a new day for the Farmersville softball program.

After a tough 2007 campaign, they will look to get back in the playoff hunt in 2008.

The task will be made easier by the return of six players from last season’s squad: Nikki Alley, Bre Ann Bates, Heather Holland, Rachel Warriner, Shelby Eaves and Elizabeth Miranda.

Joining them will be returnees Courtni Torrez and Tara McGuire, freshman pitcher Rachel Harrison and five other freshmen.

“I am very excited about this year’s team,” Farmersville head coach Jennifer Henry said.

“I have picked up some good kids this season.

Harrison is going to add depth to the pitching staff.”

They traveled to Caddo Mills Feb. 26 (results were unavailable at press time) and kick off District 13-2A action on March 4 at home versus Krum.

Henry would like to see the success the fall athletic teams had “carry over” to the softball diamond.

“We’ve gotten better each year so far, and I would like to keep that going,” she said.

“With all the excitement around the volleyball and football teams, I hope that buzz is still in the air for the spring sports.

I have girls that have experienced that feeling of going to the playoffs. It would be nice for that to carry over to softball.”

The trademark of any good team is good hitting, pitching and defense.

Defense has always been one of the Lady Farmers’ strengths season after season.

“It (defense) is the strongest part of our game,” Henry said. “I believe once again we will be strong in that area.”

However, she knows that there is much to work to do if they are to make a run for the 13-2A title.

“We have to get stronger offensively and be more confident at the plate,” Henry said.

“I really need my veterans to step up and take care of business on the offensive side of the game.”

The remaining games on the 2008 district schedule are as follows: Melissa (March 7), Blue Ridge (March 11), Aubrey (March 14), Anna (March 17), Leonard (March 18) and Ponder (March 25).

Krum wraps up the first round of district games on March 28.

The second half kicks off April 1 at Melissa and continues with Blue Ridge (April 4), Aubrey (April 8), Leonard (April 11), Anna (April 15) and Ponder (April 18).
