NEVADA — Community followed up a trip to the Class 3A Region II playoffs by earning three District 10-3A awards.
Leading the way were Matthew Hollien and Ross Hutchinson on the first team, with Nathan Miller being a second-team selection.
Collecting an honorable mention was Chance Crossetti.
“I thought the awards were very well representative of our team,” Community head coach Mike Swigert said.
“I think all our district coaches would like to have had Matthew (Hollien) and Ross (Hutchinson) on their teams.”
The Braves finished the season 6-4 in district, good enough for a third-place finish.
“We grew in almost every way and proved to be very adaptable going from a running, pressing team to a slow down team to best utilize the players we had,” Swigert said.
They lost to Frisco Wakeland 60-50 in the bi-district round on Feb. 18 at McKinney North High School.
Community made it despite losing BJ Dale for the season.
“I thought we had a great season,” Swigert said.
“Considering we lost a player of BJ Dale’s caliber.
We still found a way to make the playoffs.”
Next season’s team returns six players.
Graduating are Steven Broughton, Dillon Flowers, Jake Haynes, Ross Hutchinson, Nathan Miller and Marcus Underwood.
However, Swigert is cautious to make an predictions on how next season will play out.
“After this season I don’t care to speculate on what next year will bring,” he said.
“I will say that I am very excited about the players who are returning. I hope all of them will stay healthy and return (to the team).”
Those returning players will be tested in the newly aligned District 13-3A.
That consists of old rivals Farmersville and Princeton, along with Emory Rains, Lucas Lovejoy and Quinlan Ford.
“The new district will be fun, and the travel will be easy,” Swigert said. “I’ve always loved the rivalry between us and Farmersville.”
