Farmersville baseball fans got an up-close glimpse of what to expect for the 2008 season, and the future looks bright.
The summer leaguers overcame the loss of three seniors from last season’s squad thanks to the returning players and a fresh crop of incoming ninth-graders.
Having the opportunity to get the returning and new players on the field together has helped to build a bond that will play a key factor during game time situations.
“I think the importance of the younger and older players playing together is important for the fact that the varsity players need to know they can rely on the younger players when the time counts,” Farmersville summer league head coach Darren Brooks said.
“Just because they’re incoming freshmen (that they will be ribbed for that alone) doesn’t mean they can’t contribute to the team effort.”
Freshmen that gained valuable experience during summer action were Luke Scribner, Byron Brooks, Zach Nichols and Matthew Donaldson.
Coach Brooks said he has been pleased with the progress of the younger players from start to finish.
“From playing select baseball the last several years with me, the younger players know the game and what to do in game situations,” he said. “So far I’ve been very impressed with this group. They have had several of our good hits as well as (Byron) Brooks, (Luke) Scribner and (Matthew) Donaldson doing the bulk of the work at catcher this summer. Byron, Luke and Zack have also given us some key innings pitching as well. There are several young players in this grade (ninth) that have a lot of baseball talent that play league ball, in addition to Collin Rodgers, Adam Hazel and others. The future of Farmersville baseball looks promising.”
The team took to the road for the final time July 1 and lost 9-1 at the hands of Bland.
Most of the players are also involved in off-season workouts and 7-on-7 play. That schedule may have something to do with the loss, Coach Brooks said.
“At some point, everything just catches up with you,” he said. “They’re physically and emotionally drained.
I think last night was a good indication, not to take any thing away from Bland. They did a great job.”
The Farmers wrapped up the ’08 summer league season July 8 at home versus Caddo Mills. Results were unavailable at press time.
