It was a good year in 2010 for both the Farmersville and Community athletic programs.
Among the highlights for Farmersville were the boys’ basketball team making the playoffs, the baseball team making a third consecutive appearance (second in 3A) in the playoffs, baseball head coach Craig Coheley winning his 300th game as a head coach, and Charla Craddock taking the bronze in the 400-meter dash at the Class 3A state meet in Austin.
Topping the list for Community was the softball team, which advanced to the third round of the playoffs, Rachel Ramirez, who won silver in the 3A division at the Texas High School Powerlifting Championships, and Olivia Williams, who captured the bronze in the discus at the state meet.
Below is a breakdown of how each school’s teams did in their respective season.
Basketball
The Farmers returned to the playoffs for the first time since the 2002-’03 season, losing 59-43 to Wills Point in the bi-district round. They finished the District 13-3A season in third place at 5-5 and 16-15 overall.
The Lady Farmers ended up fourth in the district standings at 5-5.
The Braves and Lady Braves each failed to make the playoffs. The girls finished fifth at 3-7 and the boys also came in fifth.
Tennis
The Lady Farmers ended up in second overall at the 13-3A tournament. Becky Forbus captured the singles title and was third at regionals. The Farmers failed to place in the top three.
The Braves paced the way with a second-place finish. The Lady Braves failed to place.
Golf
At the district tourney the Lady Farmers finished first overall, while the Farmers were second.
Curtis Stanley ended up first at district with a two-day score of 153. That came out to 73 in the first round and an 80 in the second.
He then finished tied for sixth with a 149, which was 5-over par. As a team, the girls were 10th and boys were 13th.
The Braves finished in last place at district, and the girls failed to place.
Track and Field
The Lady Farmers finished second and the Farmers third at the 13-3A meet at Emory Rains.
Leading the way for the Lady Farmers was Charla Craddock, who captured first in the 100, 200 and 400 meters and triple jump;she was second in the long jump.
The 800-meter relay team of Elise Donaldson, Shelby Eaves, Reagan Vaughn and Haley Fink was third in a time of 1:55.40.
Leading the way for the Farmers were Byron Brooks (first in the 110- and 300-hurdles) and Michael Thompson (first in the discus and second in the shot put).
Also qualifying were Matt Donaldson (third in the 300 hurdles), Kaitlyn Beckham (second in the 3,200 and third in the 1,600), Stephanie Ray (third in the in the 3,200), Abbe Adams (first in the high jump) and Fink (second in the pole vault).
At the regional meet, Craddock was first in the 400 and second in the long jump. She then finished third in the 400 and failed to place in the top three in the long jump.
Pacing the way for both teams was Tay Davis, who won the 200, 400 and high jump. He also qualified for regionals in the 100 (second) and long jump (second).
Olivia Williams captured first in the discus. Then, she finished first at regionals and was second at state.
Powerlifting
Lady Farmer Katie Vazquez qualified for the state meet after finishing second in the 148-pound weight class. Then she took second at state.
Farmersville’s Jose Rangel was second at the regional meet and competed in state meet in the 123-pound weight class.
At state, Community’s Ramirez took first in the 105-pound class and became the third athlete in school history to capture an individual state title. It was the first in powerlifting. Mireya Navas was sixth.
Brad Moore of Community just missed out on the state meet after finishing third within the SHW class at the regional meet.
Baseball
The Farmers made a third consecutive playoff appearance and ended up tying for second with rival Princeton at 7-3.
During the postseason, they captured the bi-district title (taking two games from Eustace in a best-of-three series) and were area finalist (fell in consecutive games to eventual state champion Texarkana Pleasant Grove).
On the coaching front, Coheley won his 300th game as a head coach with a 6-1 victory over Kaufman in a playoff warm-up contest. His career spans 20 years, of which 19 are as a head coach.
The Braves were fifth in district at 2-8.
Softball
The Lady Farmers just missed qualifying for the playoffs for the second consecutive season.
They tied for third in district with Community at 5-5, but they fell to the Lady Braves in a one-game playoff.
The Lady Braves took the final spot in the Class 3A Region II playoffs.
They made the postseason after a strong finish to the second half of the 13-3A schedule, including defeating Quinlan Ford 3-2 in a three-way tie-breaker for the final playoff spot.
During the playoffs they captured the bi-district title (a 1-0 win over Canton), area (a bye) championships and were a regional quarterfinalist (a 13-0 five-inning loss to then then No. 3 state-ranked Lovejoy).
Football
The Farmers streak of four consecutive district titles and playoff appearances came to an end.
They finished the season 3-7 overall and 2-3 in 11-3A, good enough for fourth in the standings.
A very young Braves’ squad was fifth in district at 1-4 and were 1-9 overall.
Making the postseason were Lovejoy, Prosper and Princeton, the latter for the first time since 1976, when they were a 1A school.
Volleyball
The Lady Farmers, operating under new coach coach Elizabeth Tankersley, finished tied for third in 11-3A with Princeton at 5-5 and went 20-14 overall.
They were eliminated from postseason contention in a play-in match 21-25, 25-22, 22-25, 18-25 by the Lady Panthers, which determined the final playoff spot.
The Lady Braves, under the leadership of new head coach Ginger Brazil, finished 12-25 overall and 1-9 record in district, which was good for a tie with Frisco Lone Star.
Cross Country
The Lady Farmers took third at the district meet and qualified for regionals. In the top two spots were Lovejoy and Prosper. The Farmers finished sixth.
Moving on to regionals at Arlington’s Vandergriff Park as individuals were Lauren Laisure (fifth in the district girls race at 13:15) and Luke Scribner (fourth in the district boys race at 18:03).
At regionals, the Lady Farmers finished 15th with 378 points and an individual average time of 14:09.30.
Laisure finished 27th with a time of 12:57.84, and (Luke) Scribner was 18th at 16:41.46.
During the district meet, the Braves finished fifth out of six teams, and the Lady Braves failed to place, because they did not have enough runners.
Leading the way for both teams were Sarah Simmons (12th in a time of 14:21) and Zach Hernandez (13th in 18:35).
