He was born Oct. 9, 1928, in Greenville, the son of Tom Reed Poole Sr. and Violet Poole. He graduated from Greenville High School and attended the University of Texas in Austin. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, stationed in San Francisco, Calif.
He was owner and publisher of The Farmersville Times and The Princeton Herald but began his career at the Greenville Morning Herald as sports writer.
The Herald was owned and operated by the Poole family. His father was well known throughout Texas for his editorials.
After the newspaper was sold to Harte Hanks, Inc. in 1954, Mr. Poole worked for a newspaper in Jacksonville for a while and then bought The Farmersville Times from Burton and Martha Fielder. He was joined in the operation by his brother, Tom R. Poole Jr. and sister-in-law, Josalyn Poole who became editor of The Princeton Herald which they started in 1970.
At the Times, Mr. Poole wrote a popular “Page One” column.
His brother died in 1990, and the newspapers were sold in 2000 to C&S Media.
After his retirement, Mr. Poole lived in Phoenix, Ariz., but in 2004 he moved to Dallas where he married a long time friend, Frances Ann Green. She preceded him in death as did his parents.
Survivors are his sister-in-law, Josalyn Poole; niece, Julie Copeland and her husband, Mike, and children Cody, Collin and triplets John, Erin and Meggie; and nephew Tom Reed Poole III, all of Waco.
