Regulars and Dairy Queen staff gather in the recently renovated restaurant on Hwy. 380.
Though Dairy Queen in Farmersville is know for its good food and tasty treats, over the past year it has also become know for its ISD philanthropy.
Dairy Queen, which has been owned by Joe McKee for 27 years, has been chosen by the Farmersville Chamber of Commerce due to its support offered to every campus in FISD.
“Mr. McKee has been instrumental in helping us reach our goal in providing outdoor science activities to all the students at the Intermediate,” Farmersville Intermediate School Principal Hazel Johnson said.
Over the past years, the eaterie has offered students, teachers and parents the chance to raise funds for a variety of causes including the Outdoor Science Lab and Family Night’s to benefit individual campuses.
“My kids went through school here. You end up drinking coffee and getting to know everyone,” McKee said. “There is a sense of hometown spirit here.”
And that sense of hometown spirit is what many out-of-towners wish they had in their cities.
“I can’t tell you how many people come through and say, ‘I wish we had a Dairy Queen like this one,’” he said.
And part of the hometown spirit McKee refers to has recently gotten a revamp through renovations to the whole place.
Dairy Queen now has new booths, an outside patio area, new tile and features art of old Dairy Queens.
“Everyone loved the renovation,” he said.
After the purchase of a Dairy Queen sign clock, McKee said his regulars would be happy once again.
“They aren’t happy that there is not a clock in here,” he said laughing.
One thing that customers can look forward to in the future is the addition of Orange Julius and a new line of smoothies.
“People may remember Orange Julius from the past and within the next couple of weeks we will bringing them here,” McKee said.
As far as future dates that will benefit FISD the following dates have been set:
• Sept. 11 - Family Night Out at DQ - part of proceeds will go to the Outdoor Science Lab.
