The Farmersville High School Class of 2010 is known by parents, teachers and peers as an extremely competitive class.
For Valedictorian Shelby Eaves and Salutatorian Becky Forbus this is true more than ever.
Valedictorian Shelby Eaves is no stranger to hard work, dedication and time management. It has been her goal since she was named eighth-grade valedictorian to come out on top.
With a 4.4223 GPA, it’s not hard to see why her goals were accomplished.
“From sports to the classroom, I don’t want to do less than my best,” Shelby said. “It’s good to know all my hard work has paid off.”
For Shelby, any science class proved to be a challenge, but she had a great time participating in volleyball, basketball, softball, cross country and track. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and a representative for the student council.
According to FHS counselor Jill Cooper, their has not been another student with a GPA as high as Shelby’s, though Salutatorian Becky Forbus comes close with a 4.3991.
“I’ve always been happy to be second,” Becky said. “Shelby is really smart and hard working. My inner drive pushes me to do my best. If I know I can do better, I don’t want to do less than that.”
Despite her high GPA, Becky found physics challenging though she said she enjoyed spending time with her teammates and said that was the best part of high school.
She played volleyball, cross-country, basketball, tennis and track as well as being a member of the National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and a member of the student council.
Both are very familiar with their current roles since they were each respectively named as eighth-grade valedictorian and salutatorian in the past.
As the tests wind to a close, classrooms are closed up and the school is locked up for the end of the year, the two girls will move on to the next stage of their lives: college.
For Shelby, this means studying at Austin College in either occupational therapy or education.
She will be entering Austin College with numerous college hours and has received a $50,000 scholarship for the college located in Sherman and the $1,000 Gladys Best scholarship.
Eaves will play volleyball as an Austin College Kangaroo; the college is a Div. 3 school that competes in the southern collegiate athletic conference.
“I’m looking forward to volleyball,” Shelby said. “I know time management will play into it even more as I have to balance sports and classwork.”
For Becky, her college experience will take place at Texas A&M University-Commerce where she will study education to become a third- or fourth-grade teacher.
She has received a full ride from A&M- Commerce’s Honor College as well as a $10,000 Presidential Scholarship.
“I want to graduate debt free, so it has been one of my goals to get scholarships,” Becky said. “I’m looking forward to meeting new people but also know it will be hard adjusting to a new environment.”
As members of the FHS Class of 2010, Shelby and Becky will be some of the first students to walk across the stage for graduation at Plano Centre.
“It’s a lot nicer, and we don’t have to worry about the weather,” Becky said.
“I’m excited,” Shelby said. “We can invite as many people as we want and it’s air conditioned.”
As their high school careers wind to a close, Becky and Shelby both look back with fond memories and give members of the senior class a piece of advice.
“You can do anything you put your mind to. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it,” Shelby said.
“I had a great time in high school. Every single person made a difference and made our class amazing,” Becky said. “It wouldn’t have been the same without each person. Everyone is unique, and that’s what makes us special.”
As both girls walked down the hall toward the gym to get ready to battle it out during Powder Puff football, Becky summed up the transition of their lives the best: “It’s going to be weird,” she said looking into the darkened gym. “I’m going to miss Farmersville.”
