LAVON – Hydroplaning on a rain-slicked road most likely caused a crash that resulted in the death of three motorists and sent three more to the hospital Nov. 20.

The accident took place on Hwy. 205 at CR 746, just south of the Hwy. 78 intersection near the Boyd Farm.

According to Lonny Haschel, public information officer for the Texas Department of Public Safety, at 10:07 a.m. Friday, Nov. 20, a 2008 white Hyundai SUV began to hydroplane, causing it to crash head on into a 2005 Honda minivan.

Of the four occupants in the Honda, only one, a 4-year-old girl whom DPS officials have identified as “Gabby,” survived.

She was taken to Plano Children’s Medical Center.

The other three adult passengers were all Nevada residents. The driver, Andrea Dunn, 42, was transported by ambulance to Lake Pointe Medical Center. She was resuscitated by Wylie Fire-Rescue, but died at the hospital, Haschel said.

The other two passengers, John McIlvain, 76, and Margaret McIlvain, 74, were pronounce dead at the scene.

The McIlvains were Gabby’s grandparents; Dunn was her mother.

The driver of the Hyundai was Tommie Chambers, 35, of Wylie. Ariel Langford, 15, also of Wylie was a passenger. They were taken to Medical Center of Plano,  and fire-rescue personnel said they are expected to recover.

Officials reported the force of the head-on collision was so great that the engine was ripped out of the Hyundai and thrown to the other side of the road and the Honda’s back end was pushed several feet up a small tree.

Haschel said investigations are ongoing as to the specific cause of the crash; although drugs and alcohol are part of any accident investigation, officials have no reason to suspect they were involved in this case.

Haschel said WF-R was assisted by Wylie Police Department, Lavon Police Department and Collin County Sheriff’s office.
